On Intensity and the PhD

I came across this tweet talking about Joey Bose's philosophy on PhD supervision and really liked it.

When I was thinking about starting my PhD, that's exactly what I promised myself: that I'd be intense, because I love my work and want this journey to be challenging and deeply rewarding. I know it will only be that if I keep chasing the dream of becoming the best in the world in my chosen area of interest — by working closely with a great and supportive advisor, learning and collaborating with others, and standing on the shoulders of great researchers before me.

Personally, I've always believed that if you're committing to something as long and demanding as a PhD, you have to give it everything you've got to make it truly worthwhile — because the only thing harder than aiming high is settling for mediocrity.
